MASTERCLASS
On Saturday (3 December 2022), Heather Thomas will teach us about indigo dyeing. Heather Thomas is a Melbourne based natural dyer, designer and maker of textiles. Heather has been exploring the plant kingdom and working with natural fibres and plant colour for more than two decades. Through her studio and label Wild Heather she imparts her knowledge and expertise about extracting authentic and beautiful colours from nature. Heather delivers hands on workshops using traditional natural dyes, indigo and native flora. She often collaborates with local artists and fashion designers who wish to incorporate natural colours into their work. She is currently a Churchill Fellow (2019) investigating established international botanical dye studios to see how such models may be translated locally. In addition to learning how to dye cloth (soaking, dipping, oxidising, rinsing), Heather will go through the different tools to make the patterns. You will learn how to clamp, fold, and perform simple stitching, all simple and effective techniques for beginners. You will also get an indigo pack to take home.
On Sunday (4 December 2022), Holly Davis will be teaching a class on the essentials of Japanese cooking. Holly Davis’s wholefood cooking style has long been influenced by her love of and respect for Japanese culture. Her background in macrobiotics informs her current inclusive style; putting traditional Japanese wholefoods and best quality seasonal ingredients to desirable, creative use. She co created Sydney’s Iku Wholefoods Kitchen in 1985, she is no longer associated. Master some of the essential equipment, techniques and recipes that underpin Japanese cooking. Work with a range of beautiful items, from Melbourne’s essential Japanese store Cibi and make dishes using these. You will also learn how to giftwrap items you make, using the art of ‘furoshiki’ & natural indigo dyed cloth made in Heather Thomas’s class.
